One win and one loss came from last week’s home court play for the Greene County boys basketball team.
The Rams were scheduled to play three games this week: Monday at home against Grand View Christian, Tuesday at home against Perry, and Friday at Roland-Story High School in Story City.
Webster City came out firing when the Lynx played in Jefferson Jan. 2, pulling ahead to a 16-6 first quarter lead. The second quarter was even with the Lynx leading 23-12 at halftime. WC exploded for 26 points in the third while holding the Rams to 16 for a 49-28 lead. They continued to stretch the margin in the fourth for the 70-41 victory.
Brynley Ruzicka led the team in points for the night, scoring 17, with Richard Daugherty scoring seven and Jesse Miller adding six. The team had five offensive and 24 defensive rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
As a team, the Rams made just 27.5 percent of their 2-point shots and 30 percent of the three-point shots. They made 7 of 13 free throws. The Rams committed 15 turnovers and 12 fouls.
Friday’s game was at home again for Greene County, this time hosting Saydel. The Eagles were determined, taking an 18-12 lead in the first and maintaining their advantage 38-28 at halftime. The Rams started their rally in the third, cutting the margin to 48-40. Greene County came alive in the fourth quarter, pouring in 29 points while the defense held the Eagles to 13 to secure the 71-61 victory.
Richard Daugherty scored 20 points, Miller tossed in 16 and Gabe Ebersole added 15. Miller registered a double-double with 10 rebounds.
The Rams’ shooting and ball handling was better than their Monday game, shooting at 44.8 percent from two-point range and 42.9 percent from three-point range. They made 10 of 16 free throws for 62.5 percent. They turned over the ball 10 times and committed 18 fouls.
The Ram boys were in fourth place in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference as of Jan. 9. Standings: Nevada 6-1, Roland-Story 6-0, South Hamilton 4-2, Greene County 3-3, Perry 2-4, West Marshall 2-4, PCM 1-5, Saydel 1-6.
